In Episode 1 of "100 Days My Prince," we meet the two main characters, Crown Prince Lee Yool and Hong Shim, beginning from their childhood. The episode starts with Crown Prince Lee Yool standing outside in the palace observing the rainfall. He then travels on a horse to a village where he gets into an accident and loses his memory. He then lives among the commoners in the village while recovering. He then meets Hong Shim, who is Joseon's oldest unmarried woman, and marries her under the name Won Deuk. The episode hints at the kind of relationship that Hong Shim and Lee Yool will have with each other. Hong Shim is smart and runs the first private detective agency in Joseon. Crown Princess So-hye visits Yul, who's been unconscious for several days. She tells his eunuchs to find a way to give him his medicine so he can recover, then begs Yul to wake up because, she says, her life is in danger. Yul orders all birds in the palace eliminated, and when Hong Shim says that birds can fly over the walls, he asks in an emotionless voice, "Can they?" Hong Shim hollers at him over her shoulder, "The crown prince is dumb!"
